چکیده

Twenty Karakul rams were allotted to four groups, subjected first to starvation and then allowed restricted amounts (approximately 1/3 of ad l ib i tum intake) of a high fiber, low energy diet containing no additive (control), 5% 1,3-butanediol (BD), 10% BD, and 5% 1,2-propanediol (PD) for 6 weeks. Starvation elevated (P<.O01) serum ketones (3-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate) and decreased (P<.05)serum glucose. Five percent BD increased (P<.05) acetoacetate; the effect of BD on ketones was much more pronounced (P<.05) at the 10% level. BD had no effect (P>.05) on serum glucose. PD had no effect (P>.05) on ketones, but tended to increase serum glucose. Results are compared with those from other ruminant and monogastric animals. (

A ketone ester diet increases brain malonyl-CoA and Uncoupling proteins 4 and 5 while decreasing food intake in the normal Wistar Rat.

Three groups of male Wistar rats were pair fed NIH-31 diets for 14 days to which were added 30% of calories as corn starch, palm oil, or R-3-hydroxybutyrate-R-1,3-butanediol monoester (3HB-BD ester). On the 14th day, animal brains were removed by freeze-blowing, and brain metabolites measured. Animals fed the ketone ester diet had elevated mean blood ketone bodies of 3.5 mm and lowered plasma g...

Dietary nonprotein calories and cerebral infarction size in rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Conventional diets may cause hyperglycemia in patients with neurological injuries. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect on the severity of cerebral infarction of replacing carbohydrates as the primary dietary source of nonprotein calories. METHODS Sixty-nine Long-Evans rats were either fasted for 24 hours, fed isocaloric amounts of a control diet containi...

Ischemic brain damage is not ameliorated by 1,3-butanediol in hyperglycemic rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Treatment with the ketone body precursor 1,3-butanediol has been suggested to ameliorate hypoxic/ischemic brain damage. Butanediol could provide an alternative energy substrate for the brain, thereby decreasing the amount of glycolytically produced lactate. Hyperglycemia aggravates brain damage after brain ischemia and causes fatal postischemic seizures, probably by incre...

Metabolism of R- and S-1,3-butanediol in perfused livers from meal-fed and starved rats.

The metabolism of millimolar concentrations of R- or S-1,3-butanediol has been studied in perfused livers from fed and starved rats. Protocols were designed to measure in the same experiment (i) uptake of the diol, (ii) the contribution of the diol to ketogenesis, (iii) the contribution of the diol to total fatty acid plus sterol synthesis, and (iv) conversion of S-1,3-butanediol into S-3-hydro...

The metabolism of acetone in rat.

Intraperitoneal injection of 5 mumol of acetone/g, body weight, into 3 rats previously fed 1% acetone (v/v) in their drinking water resulted in the appearance in blood serum of 16 +/- 2 nmol of 1,2-propanediol/ml and 8 +/- 1 nmol of 2,3-butanediol/ml. No detectable 1,2-propanediol or 2,3-butanediol was found in the serum of animals after acetone or saline injection without prior addition of ace...
